Let's raise a glass and toast the Sandri Family of Shamokin, Pennsylvania and the Taylor Family of Stockton, California.
Sergeant Matthew J. Sandri was a combat medic with the 82nd Airborne Division serving as squad leader of his Evacuation Platoon. Sandri provided exceptional care to his paratroopers and was willing to risk his own life to get to a fallen comrade to provide critical medical aid no matter the personal danger.
Lieutenant Colonel Mark D. Taylor, MD of the 82nd Airborne Division was an Army physician and surgeon serving with a Forward Surgical Team in Fallujah, Iraq. Taylor was the first U.S. military doctor to be killed in combat since the Vietnam War.
From Bob Sandri, Matt's father:
" On this first day of Spring,
We drink not from the Lethe,
But confirm our commitment
To remember these two great men,
Whose lives and legacy
Continue to inspire.
May we never forget
Their professional integrity as healers,
Their commitment to the warfighters by their side,
And their willingness to stand between us
And those who would do us harm.
