SSG Bryan A. Burgess
United States Army

101st Airborne

APR 23, 1981 – MAR 29, 2011 |   Afghanistan

Hometown: Cleburne, TX

"Bryan exhibited signs of wanting to protect his family at a very young age. He seemed to prefer dressing up as a Police Officer on Halloween and he favored Superman and Batman as his childhood heroes. Even at the age of six, Bryan made sure we were all wearing our seat belts on trips, and he even acted as crossing guard on busy streets. So it was with no surprise that after 9/11 Bryan came to me and said, 'Dad, I'm going to fight back.' He wasn't asking me. He was telling me.

Bryan served two tours in Iraq and one - his final tour- in Afghanistan. Teaching ourselves to honor Bryan's service and sacrifice (and not just mourning his loss) helped in the creation of Gold Star Parent's Retreat. A place where other parents who have lost a son or daughter in service to our country can share their stories and honor their own heroes." - Terry Burgess, Gold Star Father and Founder of Gold Star Parent's Retreat
